Proof of sufficient English language proficiency for the study at Leibniz Universität

All regulations recorded here were decided by a group of experts in the field of Leibniz Universität Hannover’s Centre for Applied Linguistics and Special Languages (FSZ) and will be reviewed and adapted (if necessary) in at least five-year intervals, with regard to being up-to-date, formality and content. Please note, these depictions are neither necessarily exhaustive nor legally binding. Proof of sufficient English language proficiency - level B1

 

A.) Definition of language requirements

In the lower level of independent language users (global scale) CEFR requires competence of the following skills: “[The applicant] can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.; Can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken; Can produce simple, connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest; Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.”

 

B.) Areas of use

Upon enrolment or change of subject, each applicant must prove sufficient knowledge of English according to the requirements stated in section A.).

In the case of change of subject within Leibniz Universität Hannover, the requirements defined in section A.) may differ to the language requirements necessary, thus making up-to-date proof of language proficiency necessary.

 

C.) Tests and examinations as proof of the linguistic studying capability

The following tests/exams serve as proof of sufficient language proficiency:

  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®, iBT) with a result of at least 53 points
  2. Test of Englsih as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®, PBT) with a result of at least 460 points
  3. International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) with a result of at least 4.5
  4. Preliminary English Test (PET)
  5. Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) with a result of at least 43 points
  6. UNIcert® I

Proof of sufficient English language proficiency - level B2

 

A.) Definition of language requirements

In the upper level of independent language users (global scale) CEFR requires competence of the following skills: “[The applicant] can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation; Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers fairly possible without strain for either party; Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.”

 

B.) Areas of use

Upon enrolment or change of subject, each applicant must prove sufficient knowledge of English according to the requirements stated in section A.).

In the case of change of subject within Leibniz Universität Hannover, the requirements defined in section A.) may differ to the language requirements necessary, thus making up-to-date proof of language proficiency necessary.

 

C.) Tests and examinations as proof of the linguistic studying capability

  5. Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) with a result of at least 59 points
  6. telc English B2⋅C1 University
  7. UNIcert® II

Proof of sufficient English language proficiency - level C1

 

A.) Definition of language requirements

In the upper level of independent language users (global scale) CEFR requires competence of the following skills: “[The applicant] can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning; Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions; Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes; Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.”

 

B.) Areas of use

Upon enrolment or change of subject, each applicant must prove sufficient knowledge of English according to the requirements stated in section A.).

In the case of change of subject within Leibniz Universität Hannover, the requirements defined in section A.) may differ to the language requirements necessary, thus making up-to-date proof of language proficiency necessary.

 

C.) Tests and examinations as proof of the linguistic studying capability

The following tests/exams serve as proof of sufficient language proficiency:

  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®, iBT) with a result of at least 95 points
  2. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®, PBT) with a result of at least 627 points
  3. International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) with a result of at least 7.0
  4. Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
  5. Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) with a result of at least 76 Punkten
  6. telc English B2⋅C1 University
  7. UNIcert® III
