Latin Courses

Latin courses on offer at the FSZ at Leibniz Universität Hannover

Course series

The following series of courses is offered for Latin: 

1. Beginners' course A       (textbook work)
2. Intermediate course F1   (textbook, reading of original texts)
3. Intermediate course F2   (Caesar and other authors)
4. Intermediate course F3   (Cicero and Sallust)

Course content and aims

Course A

The course teaches the basics on morphology, syntax and vocabulary, through the use of a textbook.

Course F1

Admission is based on successful completion of the beginners' course (A1) or proof of comparable language proficiency.

Course F2

Admission is based on the successful completion of course F1 or proof of comparable language proficiency.

Longer passages from Caesar's Bellum Gallicum and simple texts by other authors will be used to develop translation skills and prepare students for the basic Latin exam. The historical and socio-cultural background of the texts will also be explored.

Course F3

Admission is based on the successful completion of course F2 or proof of comparable language proficiency.

Students will read challenging  passages from Cicero's discourses and Sallust's historical works. In addition to intensive development of translation skills, the course also covers historical and political themes, whilst analysing the stylistic characteristics of each author.

Basic / advanced Latin certificate

Upon completion of course F 2 an exam can be taken at the FSZ, equivalent to the basic Latin certificate, confirming intermediate language proficiency in Latin.

The supplementary state exam - basic / advanced Latin certificate - consists of both a written and oral exam. The exam takes place at the following address: Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gymnasium und Ratsgymnasium, Seelhorsterstraße 52, Hannover.

Here students can also request and collect exam papers.
