What is Tandem Learning?
What is a Tandem partnership?
In a Tandem partnership, two people with different native languages work together in order to learn the other's language. For example, if you would like to improve your knowledge of Spanish, German, French or Polish, you can work with a Spanish, German, French or Polish native speaker, who in return would like to learn your native language. Through Tandem learning you can supplement a language course and progress independently.
What are the advantages of Tandem learning?
- Paired learning: In a Tandem partnership both partners benefit equally, encouraging and supporting each other - resulting in very effective mutual learning.
- Independent learning: Content, amount and method of learning are determined by each individual Tandem partner. Nevertheless, the other partner is always there to help.
- Intercultural learning: In addition to language learning, a Tandem partnership also introduces each partner to the culture of the other.
- Flexible learning: Tandem partners can decide amongst themselves when they wish to meet.
- Fee-free learning.
How does Tandem learning work?
The pair meets, dividing the time equally between the two languages. For example, 2 hours a week, working on each language for an hour. You could even exchange with your Tandem partner via mail or Skype.
You are free to decide how, what and where you learn. In return, you will help your partner learn your native language.
